I first learned about the relationship between gut health and grass-fed gelatin while on the SCD diet. Not really for the vegetarians among us (although I know many who seem happy to munch on bags of store-bought gummy sweets), gelatin is a protein-rich substance made from bones, hides and connective tissues of animals. That's not to say store-bought gummies will heal your gut. No, sir. Grass-fed is the key here.
So what's in it for me, someone on a largely plant-based diet?
It's anti-inflammatory, and after years of gut issues it's great to calm my system down. I'm also struggling with oestrogen-dominance, which isn't helped by inflammation either.
It can help to repair damaged gut linings, which can be the cause of food intolerances, further inflammation and all that jazz.
It supports the liver. Mine is apparently under strain and doesn't clear oestrogen from my body properly.
I once read it can help you sleep if you eat a square before bed. And who doesn't need more sleep?
There are tonnes of other reasons, too. Sarah Wilson lists plenty here. In fact, it was her book Simplicious that opened the gelatin doors for me. Her recipes are ace. Here's one of mine.
A side note: I've also poured this mixture into ramekins and chilled for less time so the texture becomes more like chocolate pudding. Dessert!
